The iconic Honda Civic has been winning hearts and minds for over 50 years, not to mention a whole lot of recognition. From countless safety-related awards to recent honors recognizing the promising performance potential of Honda’s two-motor hybrid system, the Civic is certainly no stranger to the podium. In fact, the compelling compact has many awards to its name.

While the Civic's prestigious titles aren't the be-all, end-all when it comes to comparing your compact options, they are sure to instill you with a little extra confidence when you start to search for a Honda Civic for sale near Key Biscayne. Let’s walk through some of the Civic’s recent recognitions and learn how Honda’s compact model has earned its place in the segment.

North American Car of the Year

We’ll start with the first and most prestigious of the Civic’s many honors: the North American Car of the Year (NACTOY) award. The Civic has walked away with the industry’s most coveted award multiple times throughout its long run, with the car racking up three titles in the last decade alone. The Civic’s historic streak started in 2016; the compact repeated its success in 2022, and 2025 marks the latest honor, with the NACTOY committee bestowing a fourth title on the Civic.[a]

The Civic’s success will come as little surprise to any driver who’s spent time behind the wheel of Honda’s compact car, but what makes the 2025 model such a standout? In short, everything. “The 2025 Honda Civic Hybrid is a much-needed affordable high-mileage family car. In addition to sharp styling, a nicely crafted interior, and a comfortable ride, the Civic Hybrid delivers exceptional fuel economy,” says Matt DeLorenzo, Editor-in-Chief at Tightwad Garage and NACTOY juror.

The compact’s style recently improved, as Honda refreshed the 2025 model, with the new Civic tweaking the grille to better complement the revamped LED headlights that now come standard on every trim. The Civic hasn’t gained any width as part of the mid-cycle refresh, but new front and rear fascias do lend the car a more aggressive stance that’s sure to turn some heads as you cruise around Key Biscayne.

Honda also rolled out a new set of wheel options for the new year, as well as new color options and old favorites. The interior sees the Civic defy its low starting price with a sophisticated suite of infotainment and connectivity tech, ranging from an optional nine-inch touchscreen display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility to a 12-speaker Bose stereo system, a 10.2-inch digital gauge display, and a wireless charging pad.

There is one important distinction to be made when it comes to this latest NACTOY honor. While past awards recognized the gas-powered Civic, the 2025 trophy specifically cited the hybrid model. Honda’s groundbreaking two-motor hybrid system sees the Civic deliver an incredible mix of power and efficiency.

The compact’s standard 2.0L inline-four engine is pretty economical in its own right, with the 2026 Civic Sedan getting an EPA-estimated 36 MPG combined.[b] However, the hybrid powertrain squeezes even more power out of the same engine, thanks to an electric propulsion motor, an electric generator motor, and a small battery pack.

This powertrain design not only gives the 2026 Civic Sedan Hybrid an impressive EPA-estimated 49 MPG combined, but it also has a noticeable impact on performance, with the electrically assisted engine returning 200 hp and adding nearly 100 lb-ft of torque.[c] “The Civic Hybrid brings Honda’s superb and fuel-efficient hybrid system into one of the market’s best compact sedans. Fun, fuel-efficient, and more elegant than its predecessors, it’s a hands-down winner,” says automotive journalist and NACTOY voter John Voelcker.

Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems

Honda's two-motor hybrid system not only gives the automaker an entry in a market that’s eagerly embracing electrically assisted vehicles, but it’s also a key part of a wider effort that will see the brand eliminate all emissions by 2040. Originally introduced in the 2014 Accord Hybrid, the hybrid system has powered over 700,000 Honda vehicles over the last decade. The two-motor hybrid system is only improving with age, and was already recognized as one of Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion System back on the 2023 Accord.[d]

The Civic joined the party in 2025, gaining its own two-motor hybrid system that quickly drew the attention of the team at Wards and allowed Honda to land its third Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion System award in as many years.[e] “Along with the marriage of athleticism and fuel-sipping, the Honda two-motor hybrid system imbues in the compact Honda Civic hybrid, the transparency of its operation and its affordability are other factors that wowed our judges,” said Wards judge Christie Schweinsberg.

It’s a well-deserved honor that speaks to Honda’s innovative legacy, but what makes the Civic’s hybrid system so special? It’s all about the way the motors have been deployed. Hybrid powertrains have undoubtedly evolved since the Honda Insight hit the market for the 2000 model year, and Honda has taken the next step by moving away from the parallel hybrid designs that have dominated the market for decades.

The parallel approach has its advantages, allowing the engine and electric motors to provide propulsion either together or separately, but Honda has bucked that trend by equipping the Civic with an inline hybrid arrangement. This approach is simpler and lighter, making it the perfect fit for the compact Civic, but there are also some performance-related benefits to be had.

The two-motor hybrid system is designed with a novel lockup clutch that makes the Civic a pleasure to drive at higher speeds. Most hybrids task their electric motors with handling a lion’s share of the propulsion duties, but this approach is a lot less efficient as speeds start to climb. The Civic’s high-speed lockup clutch allows Key Biscayne drivers to bypass the electric system at higher speeds, creating a direct, mechanical link between the engine and the wheels to ensure consistent performance.

NHTSA and IIHS Safety Awards

A safe design and comprehensive suite of advanced assistance tech have seen the Civic fill its trophy case with a heap of awards from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). In fact, the Civic has received an NHTSA five-star overall safety rating every year since the introduction of the 11th generation in 2022, and consistently finished as either an IIHS Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ over the same period.[f][g] It’s a strong showing by any measure, and one that speaks to the safety of this compact car.

Standard on every 2026 Civic, the Honda Sensing suite includes a generous array of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) that are designed to improve driver confidence and create a safe, seamless ride. A forward collision warning system acts as a vital safety net when you’re behind the wheel, and even includes an automatic braking feature that can jump into action should you be slow to react.

Lane departure warning and lane keeping assistance keep the Civic firmly planted between the lines, and an adaptive cruise control system will handle all of the acceleration and braking duties while maintaining a set distance from other vehicles. Traffic Jam Assist represents an improvement on the traditional lane-keeping system, enabling the Civic to handle all steering, braking, and acceleration when you’re trying to make your way back to Key Biscayne through the chronically congested Miami streets.

The 2026 Civic’s safety suite only improves as you climb up the trim ladder, with the Sport trim adding a blind-spot warning system. Every driver has experienced that heart-in-your-throat feeling that comes with trying to merge into an adjacent lane only to find that it's already occupied by another vehicle. The blind-spot warning system makes those moments a thing of the past, thanks to sensors built right into the back bumper.

The Honda Sensing suite even includes a rear cross-traffic feature that detects passing cars when the vehicle is in reverse, which can prove useful in crowded parking lots and other obstacle-rich environments. The Sport Touring trim rounds out the 2026 Civic’s arsenal with a set of front and rear parking sensors that’ll protect the paint job from any scratches, dents, and dings.

A Compact Champion

Year after year, the Honda Civic has proven to be a well-rounded option for drivers shopping in the compact car segment. The Civic’s safety resume is beyond reproach, which can make all the difference when you’re in the market for a new family vehicle or daily driver. An expansive slate of ADAS tech, including cutting-edge features like Traffic Jam Assist, offers some valuable peace of mind and enhances the car's appeal in a competitive market.

The Civic’s two-motor hybrid system offers an engaging—and sustainable—approach that’s earned considerable attention from buyers and critics alike, including the experts at WardsAuto. Finally, there’s the compact’s NACOTY record, which cements the Civic’s reputation and simplifies the buying process for those who will settle for nothing but the best.
