Honda Spark Plugs and Valve Clearance Near 100,000 Miles: What Maintenance Minder Code 4 Means in Miami Stop-and-Go Traffic
Honda spark plugs and valve clearance are not tied to a fixed mileage on 2026 models. Your Maintenance Minder calls for them with code 4, and what that code includes depends on your engine. Here is how to read it when most of your miles are stop-and-go.
- No fixed mileage. 2026 Honda owner's manuals list no 100,000-mile interval for spark plugs or valve clearance. The Maintenance Minder shows sub-item 4 when they are due.
- Code 4 is not the same on every Honda. Accord, CR-V, HR-V, Odyssey, Ridgeline and manual-transmission Civic add a valve clearance inspection. Hybrids and CVT Civics list spark plugs only.
- V6 models add a timing belt. On the Pilot, Passport, Odyssey and Ridgeline, code 4 also means replacing the timing belt and inspecting the water pump.
- The Minder accounts for how you drive. Honda says it weighs speed, operating and ambient temperature, time and vehicle use.
Does Honda say to replace spark plugs and check valve clearance at 100,000 miles?
No. For 2026 models, Honda publishes no fixed mileage for spark plugs or valve clearance. The Maintenance Minder shows sub-item 4 when they are due. Many owners remember 100,000 miles as a planning milestone. It is not a Honda interval. We checked the Maintenance Minder tables in 13 current U.S. Honda owner's manuals, from the Civic to the Ridgeline. None of them lists a mileage for spark plugs or valve clearance.
Honda explains why. With the maintenance schedule no longer in the owner's manual, the system sets the maintenance pattern from mileage and the conditions of that mileage. Older Hondas without the Minder did use fixed numbers. An older Civic GX supplement, for example, listed platinum-tipped plugs at 7 years or 105,000 miles. That rule belongs to that vehicle and era, not to a 2026 Honda.
The useful question is whether your Honda is showing code 4, and what code 4 includes for your engine.
What does Maintenance Minder code 4 include on each 2026 Honda?
Code 4 always means new spark plugs. Depending on the engine, it can also mean a valve clearance inspection, a timing belt and a water pump inspection. The Maintenance Minder pairs a main code with sub-items. Code A means replace the engine oil. Code B means replace the oil and oil filter, plus a list of inspections. Sub-items 1 through 7 cover tire rotation, filters, transmission fluid, spark plugs, coolant, rear differential fluid and brake fluid. A message such as B124 combines them. Here is what Honda lists for sub-item 4 in each 2026 U.S. owner's manual.
| 2026 model | Engine / transmission | What sub-item 4 lists |
|---|---|---|
| Civic Sedan and Hatchback | CVT models | Replace spark plugs |
| Civic Sedan and Hatchback | Manual transmission models | Replace spark plugs; inspect valve clearance |
| Civic Hybrid (Sedan and Hatchback) | 2.0L hybrid | Replace spark plugs |
| Accord | 1.5L turbo | Replace spark plugs; inspect valve clearance |
| Accord Hybrid | 2.0L hybrid | Replace spark plugs |
| CR-V | 1.5L turbo | Replace spark plugs; inspect valve clearance |
| CR-V Hybrid | 2.0L hybrid | Replace spark plugs |
| HR-V | 2.0L | Replace spark plugs; inspect valve clearance |
| Pilot and Passport | 3.5L V6 | Replace spark plugs; replace timing belt and inspect water pump |
| Odyssey and Ridgeline | 3.5L V6 | Replace spark plugs; replace timing belt and inspect water pump; inspect valve clearance |

Two details matter at the service counter. First, code A does not include a new oil filter; code B does. Second, these engines use different spark plug part numbers, so the right plug depends on your engine, not your mileage. Our Honda Genuine Parts department can help confirm the correct plug for your engine. Honda recommends Honda Genuine Parts and fluids when servicing your vehicle.
Does every Honda need a valve adjustment with code 4?
No. Where Honda lists it, the item is "inspect valve clearance." Honda says to adjust the valves only if they are noisy. It is easy to misread this line. Honda's wording is inspect, not adjust. The manuals add a separate note: adjust the valves during services A, B, 1, 2 or 3 if they are noisy. Honda ties adjustment to noisy valves rather than to the plug change.
It also does not apply to every Honda. Sub-item 4 has no valve clearance item on the 2026 Civic CVT models, the Civic, Accord and CR-V hybrids, or the Pilot and Passport. If you drive one of those and hear about a "code 4 valve adjustment," ask to see where it appears in your owner's manual.
Open your owner's manual to "Maintenance Minder" and read the sub-item 4 line for your engine. Note the exact message on your display, for example B124. You can also call us at 786-628-0577 and read us the code.
How does the Maintenance Minder decide when code 4 is due?
Honda says the Minder continuously checks conditions such as speed, operating temperature, ambient temperature, time and vehicle use. It uses them to decide when maintenance is necessary. For engine oil, every 2026 manual we checked uses the same sentence: based on the engine operating conditions, the remaining engine oil life is calculated and displayed as a percentage. Below 15% oil life, the Minder shows its message each time you turn the power on. Messages appear at 15% (Maintenance Due Soon), again at 5%, and at 0%, when service is past due.
Honda adds two rules. If no Minder message appears within 12 months of the last reset, change the engine oil every year anyway. After any service, reset the display. Honda warns that skipping the reset makes the system show incorrect intervals, which can lead to serious mechanical problems. As Honda's manual notes, the dealer resets the display after completing the service.
What does Miami stop-and-go traffic mean for code 4 timing?
Follow the Minder rather than the odometer. Honda says the Minder weighs speed, temperature, time and vehicle use, so it accounts for how you drive. Think about a typical week on SW 8th Street, Brickell Avenue, I-95 or US-1. The engine spends long stretches at low speed or idling while the odometer barely moves. Highway driving adds miles quickly under very different conditions. Honda's 2026 manuals have no separate stop-and-go rule for spark plugs or valves. Instead, Honda says the Minder weighs operating conditions such as speed, temperature, time and vehicle use.
| Driving pattern | Related input on Honda's list | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Rush-hour crawl on I-95, US-1 or SW 8th St | Speed and time | Expect code 4 to follow the Minder, not a round odometer number |
| Hot afternoons in slow traffic | Ambient and operating temperature | Reset the Minder after every service so it stays accurate |
| Many short errands around Brickell and Downtown | Vehicle use | Watch for the 15% message and book before 0% |
| Long highway days | Speed and vehicle use | Same rule: the Minder message sets the date |
The inputs are quoted from Honda's owner site. The pairings are our illustration; Honda does not say how any single pattern changes the timing.
A Honda past 100,000 miles without code 4 is not overdue by Honda's system, as long as the Minder was reset after each service. Code 4 appearing earlier is not a mistake either. Book it when the message appears, ideally with its A or B service, so your Honda visits the bay once. Our routine Honda maintenance page covers the services that ride along with it.
Why is code 4 a bigger visit on a Pilot, Passport, Odyssey or Ridgeline?
On the 2026 3.5L V6 models, sub-item 4 also means replacing the timing belt and inspecting the water pump. The 2026 Civic, Accord, CR-V and HR-V, including the hybrids, show no timing belt item. The V6 models do. That makes code 4 on a Honda Pilot or an Odyssey a bigger visit than plugs alone, so plan for it.
Honda gives one conditional mileage for the belt: every 60,000 miles if you regularly drive over 110°F, under -20°F, or tow a trailer. The Odyssey footnote lists the temperatures only, not towing. Honda's threshold is regular driving over 110°F, so everyday Miami heat is not what the footnote describes. Regular towing can apply on the Pilot, Passport and Ridgeline.

Schedule ServiceWhat should you do if the check engine light flashes before code 4 appears?
Honda says a blinking check engine light means the engine has detected a misfire, and it gives specific steps. A misfire can have several causes, and worn plugs are only one possibility. Treat a flashing light as a diagnosis visit, not an automatic plug change. Honda's steps:
- Pull over safely. Park where there are no flammable items nearby. Wait at least 10 minutes with the engine stopped until it cools.
- Restart and watch the light. If it blinks again, Honda says to drive to the nearest dealer at 31 mph or less.
- If it stays on steadily instead. Avoid high speeds and have the vehicle inspected at a dealer right away. Honda warns that driving with the light on can damage the emissions control system and the engine.
Our check engine light diagnosis page covers what happens next. Before any engine visit, it is also worth checking open Honda recalls for your VIN.
What happens at a code 4 visit at Brickell Honda?
The visit follows the sub-item 4 line for your engine. It is usually paired with the A or B service in the same message. Here is the order our service advisors can walk you through before any work begins.
- Confirm the code and the engine. Our advisors can read the full Minder message and match it to your model, engine and transmission.
- Replace the spark plugs with the plug Honda specifies for that engine. Honda recommends Honda Genuine Parts and fluids when servicing your vehicle.
- Inspect valve clearance only where your sub-item 4 lists it. Adjust only if the valves are noisy, as Honda directs.
- On V6 models, replace the timing belt and inspect the water pump along with the plugs.
- Complete the paired A or B service in the same visit, for example B124.
- Reset the Maintenance Minder so the next message is accurate. Keep your repair order, with its date and mileage, for your records.

Do you have to do code 4 at the dealer to keep your Honda warranty?
No. Honda's 2026 warranty booklet says service at an authorized Honda dealer is not mandatory for continued warranty coverage. Honda states this in the warranty booklet itself, and federal law backs it up.
"However, service at an authorized Honda automobile dealer is not mandatory for continued warranty coverage." (2026 Honda Warranty Booklet). The FTC adds that it is illegal for a dealer to deny warranty coverage because routine maintenance or repairs were done by someone else.
What matters is proof the work was done. Honda recommends keeping all maintenance receipts. Repair orders showing the date and odometer mileage are the kind of evidence Honda describes. Honda's booklet names spark plugs as an example of normal maintenance items, excluded unless defective. Replacing plugs at code 4 is routine maintenance, not a warranty repair. For reference, the 2026 New Vehicle Limited Warranty runs 3 years or 36,000 miles. The Powertrain Limited Warranty runs 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first.
At the dealer, the plugs, the Minder reset and the dated records happen in one visit. Does stop-and-go traffic wear out spark plugs faster?
Honda does not say so. Its 2026 owner's manuals have no stop-and-go or short-trip rule for spark plugs or valve clearance. Honda also does not classify Miami driving as a special condition for them. Honda says the Maintenance Minder weighs speed, operating and ambient temperature, time and vehicle use, so follow the code 4 message rather than a mileage estimate.
Does my Honda hybrid need a valve clearance inspection with code 4?
On the 2026 Civic Hybrid, Accord Hybrid and CR-V Hybrid, sub-item 4 lists spark plugs only. There is no valve clearance item. Check the Maintenance Minder table in your own owner's manual to confirm the line for your vehicle. Items can differ by model year, engine and transmission.
Does the 2026 Honda Pilot need a timing belt when code 4 appears?
Yes. On the 2026 Pilot and Passport, sub-item 4 lists replacing the spark plugs, replacing the timing belt and inspecting the water pump. The Odyssey and Ridgeline add a valve clearance inspection to that list. The 2026 Civic, Accord, CR-V and HR-V, including the hybrids, show no timing belt item.
What is a Honda B124 service?
It is a Maintenance Minder message that combines main code B with sub-items 1, 2 and 4. Code B means replacing the engine oil and filter plus a list of inspections. Sub-item 1 is a tire rotation. Sub-item 2 covers the air cleaner and the dust and pollen filter, plus a drive belt inspection on non-hybrid gas models. Sub-item 4 is the spark plug line for your engine, as shown in your owner's manual.
Does Miami heat put my V6 on the 60,000-mile timing belt schedule?
Heat alone usually does not. Honda's conditional 60,000-mile belt interval applies on the Pilot, Passport and Ridgeline if you regularly drive over 110°F, under -20°F, or tow a trailer. The Odyssey footnote lists the temperatures only. Everyday Miami heat is not what that footnote describes, so follow the Minder unless you tow regularly.
Which spark plugs does my Honda use?
It depends on the engine. Honda's 2026 specifications list different spark plug part numbers for the 1.5L turbo, the 2.0L (Civic CVT and the hybrids), the HR-V 2.0L and the 3.5L V6 engines. The simplest way to get the right one is to ask our parts team to confirm it for your engine before the visit.
Can I clear the Maintenance Minder message without doing the service?
You should not. Honda warns that failing to reset the display after maintenance makes the system show incorrect intervals, which can lead to serious mechanical problems. Resetting without doing the work creates the same problem in reverse. Reset it only after the service shown in the message is complete.
What if my Honda is past 100,000 miles and has never shown code 4?
By Honda's own system, it is not overdue, as long as the Minder was reset after each service. The Minder decides when sub-item 4 is due from operating conditions, not a fixed mileage. Keep up with the A and B services it shows. If no message appears within 12 months of a reset, Honda says to change the oil anyway.
Do I have to service my Honda at the dealer to keep the warranty?
No. Honda's 2026 warranty booklet states that service at an authorized Honda dealer is not mandatory for continued warranty coverage. Keep your receipts and repair orders showing the date and mileage. The FTC also says a dealer cannot deny warranty coverage because maintenance was done somewhere else.
