Honda Rear Differential Fluid and Sub Code 6
September 14 2026 - By Brickell Honda Service Center

A Honda all-wheel-drive SUV photographed at Brickell Honda in Miami.Maintenance Minder sub code 6 means your Honda is due for a rear differential fluid replacement. It applies to Honda vehicles equipped with an applicable all-wheel-drive system, including AWD versions of models such as the CR-V, HR-V and Pilot, as well as current Passport and Ridgeline models. Florida drivers sometimes assume that all-wheel drive matters only in snow, but Honda AWD systems also operate in everyday conditions such as rain, changing traction and cornering.

What does Maintenance Minder sub code 6 mean?

Sub code 6 is Honda's instruction to replace the rear differential fluid on applicable vehicles. It is a scheduled maintenance item, not by itself an indication that something has failed. American Honda service documentation identifies Maintenance Minder sub-item number 6 as "Replace Rear Differential Fluid" (American Honda Service Bulletin 24-022, published via NHTSA, retrieved September 14, 2026).

Like other sub codes, it often appears alongside an A or B main code and other maintenance items that are due. Our guide to Honda Maintenance Minder codes explains how to read the complete code shown on the vehicle.

Why the rear differential is more than a simple gearset

A Honda all-wheel-drive rear unit does more than simply allow the left and right rear wheels to rotate at different speeds. Depending on the AWD system and model year, the assembly also incorporates clutch and hydraulic-control components that help manage how torque reaches the rear wheels. That is one reason the specified fluid and service procedure matter.

Honda currently uses two main AWD system families in these vehicles. i-VTM4 can vary torque between the rear wheels through its torque-vectoring capability, while Real Time AWD can send additional torque to the rear axle when the system determines it is useful. Honda notes that Real Time AWD can respond to vehicle conditions such as steering input rather than waiting solely for obvious front-wheel slip.

The exact internal design varies by model and generation, but the rear unit depends on fluid with the correct friction and lubrication characteristics. Using the wrong fluid or servicing the unit incorrectly can affect how the system operates.

American Honda's Service Bulletin 24-022 provides a useful example of how sophisticated one rear AWD unit can be. On the specific Acura MDX and TLX models covered by that bulletin, the assembly includes an electric oil pump motor, electrical connectors, a breather hose and related components. The bulletin applies only to the vehicles and conditions identified in it and should not be treated as a universal repair procedure for Honda AWD models.

Which Hondas show sub code 6, and which do not?

If a Honda is front-wheel drive and has no rear differential, rear differential fluid service does not apply to that configuration. On models offered with both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, whether sub code 6 applies depends on how that individual vehicle is equipped. The current lineup can be summarized as follows.

Model All-wheel-drive system Can it show sub code 6?
Passport Second-generation i-VTM4, standard on current models Yes
Ridgeline i-VTM4 AWD, standard on current models Yes
Pilot i-VTM4 AWD, depending on trim and configuration Yes, if equipped with AWD
CR-V and CR-V Hybrid Real Time AWD, depending on trim and configuration Yes, if equipped with AWD
HR-V Real Time AWD, available Yes, if equipped with AWD
Civic, Accord and Odyssey No applicable rear AWD differential in current U.S. configurations No

System names and current availability: Honda, automobiles.honda.com/rugged, retrieved September 14, 2026. Drivetrain availability and service requirements vary by model year and trim, so confirm against the owner's manual, VIN or vehicle configuration.

Honda markets these current systems as all-wheel drive. Terminology used in technical documentation can vary, so when scheduling service the safest approach is to identify the vehicle by model, year and VIN rather than relying only on terms such as "AWD" or "4WD."

How often should you change rear differential fluid on a Honda?

For most owners, the first instruction is the vehicle's Maintenance Minder and the maintenance information in the owner's manual for that exact model and year. Honda calculates Maintenance Minder information using vehicle operating conditions rather than treating every vehicle as if it follows one universal mileage interval.

Some operating conditions can require differential-fluid service more frequently than the normal Maintenance Minder schedule. Honda owner's manuals for applicable AWD models specifically identify regular trailer towing and low-speed driving in mountainous areas as conditions that can place greater mechanical stress on differential fluid. The exact special-use interval should be confirmed in the owner's manual for your vehicle rather than applying one mileage figure to every Honda AWD system.

If you tow: tell the advisor when you book. Regular towing can change the applicable differential-fluid maintenance schedule on certain Honda AWD models, so towing history is useful information when the service team reviews what is due.

What type of fluid does a Honda rear differential require?

Use the fluid specified for the exact Honda model, model year and AWD system. Rear differential fluid should not be selected simply by assuming that every differential uses conventional hypoid gear oil or automatic transmission fluid. Honda AWD systems can require specialized fluids designed for their particular clutch and hydraulic characteristics.

American Honda's Service Bulletin 24-022 illustrates why model-specific information matters. For the Acura MDX and TLX vehicles covered by that bulletin, the repair procedure specifies Acura All-Wheel Drive Fluid (DPSF), part number 08200-9007A, with a 1.82-liter (1.92 U.S.-quart) fill quantity and an air-bleeding procedure after replacement of the differential pump motor. Those specifications and that air-bleeding procedure apply to the Acura repair described in the bulletin; they are not universal specifications for Honda rear differential maintenance.

For your Honda, check the owner's manual or have the correct specification confirmed from the VIN before fluid is added. The fluid type, capacity and service procedure can vary by model and generation.

Does a Honda in Florida really need this if it never sees snow?

Yes. All-wheel drive is not limited to winter driving. Honda AWD systems can operate in rain, during acceleration, while cornering and when traction varies between the tires. South Florida supplies plenty of conditions in which the system can be active even though the vehicle never encounters snow.

The rear AWD assembly also sits underneath the vehicle and is exposed to water, road debris and environmental conditions. American Honda documented water intrusion and corrosion at the rear differential pump-motor connector on specific 2015-2020 Acura TLX AWD and 2016-2020 Acura MDX AWD vehicles in Service Bulletin 24-022.

That bulletin does not establish that the same failure condition exists on current Honda CR-V, HR-V, Pilot, Passport or Ridgeline models. Its relevance here is simply that rear AWD assemblies can contain electrical and hydraulic components in addition to mechanical gearing, which is another reason unusual symptoms after significant water exposure deserve inspection rather than assumption.

After significant flood exposure: if your Honda has been driven through unusually deep standing water, have the vehicle inspected according to Honda's guidance for your specific model. Do not assume a Maintenance Minder code will identify every possible water-related problem.

A shudder on a slow turn can be a reason to have the system checked

A groan, shudder or binding sensation during a tight, low-speed turn can sometimes be associated with the rear AWD system or its fluid. Parking-garage ramps and other tight turns can make driveline symptoms easier to notice because the front and rear wheels are traveling different paths.

Other things worth reporting include:

  • An AWD or drivetrain warning light, which calls for diagnosis rather than routine maintenance alone
  • A hum or whine from the rear that changes with road speed
  • Visible fluid or fresh wetness around the rear differential housing

A low-speed shudder is not automatically proof of a differential-fluid problem. Tire-pressure differences, mismatched tire wear, brake problems and other driveline conditions can create similar sensations. Diagnosis should come before replacing parts or selling additional service.

Is it really necessary to change rear differential fluid?

If an applicable AWD Honda is showing Maintenance Minder sub code 6, Honda is calling for rear differential fluid replacement. Following the specified maintenance schedule helps keep the AWD system operating as designed.

A few important distinctions are worth making:

  • If your Honda does not have a rear differential, rear differential service does not apply. Confirm the vehicle's drivetrain configuration if there is any uncertainty.
  • Follow the service procedure for the specific model. Rear differential maintenance is commonly a drain-and-refill procedure, but the correct fluid, capacity, sealing components and any additional procedural steps depend on the vehicle.
  • Routine maintenance can be performed outside a Honda dealership. What matters is that the work follows the correct procedure and uses fluid and parts that meet the applicable specifications. Keep the invoice and service record, and make sure the Maintenance Minder is reset only after the corresponding maintenance has actually been completed.

There are situations in which a Honda-authorized dealer is especially useful, including an AWD warning light, a possible warranty repair, significant flood exposure, or questions about whether a vehicle is covered by a Brickell Honda maintenance program. Factory warranty coverage is not automatically voided simply because routine service is performed elsewhere; however, warranty coverage can depend on the cause of a failure, the work performed and the applicable warranty terms.

What changes the price of a rear differential service?

We do not publish a single price for every Honda because the correct service can vary by model and AWD system. A vehicle-specific estimate is more useful than a generic range.

  • Your model, model year and AWD system
  • The specified fluid and required quantity
  • Whether sealing washers or other one-time-use components are required by the service procedure
  • Whether sub code 6 appears with other maintenance items due at the same visit
  • Whether an inspection finds a leak, damaged component, warning code or another condition requiring diagnosis or repair
  • Whether an applicable maintenance program, service contract or warranty covers any part of the visit

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my Honda needs transmission fluid?

Transmission fluid is a different Maintenance Minder item. Sub code 3 calls for transmission fluid service, and on models equipped with a separately serviced transfer unit it can also include transfer fluid. Sub code 6 refers to rear differential fluid. More than one sub code can appear at the same time, which is why a longer Maintenance Minder string can be confusing. Our Maintenance Minder guide explains the individual codes.

Can I reset sub code 6 myself without doing the service?

The Maintenance Minder can be reset through the vehicle's controls, but it should only be reset after the corresponding maintenance has been completed. Resetting it without performing the service can make future interval information inaccurate. If an independent shop performs the work, confirm that the correct maintenance item was reset and keep the service invoice for your records.

My Honda is front-wheel drive. Why am I seeing a code 6?

If the vehicle truly has no rear differential, rear differential service should not apply. A longer maintenance string may have been misread, or the vehicle's drivetrain configuration may need to be confirmed. Photograph the display before resetting it and have the code checked against the owner's manual or by a qualified service professional.

Does having this service done somewhere else affect my Honda warranty?

Federal warranty law generally does not allow a manufacturer to deny warranty coverage solely because routine maintenance or repairs were performed by an independent service provider. However, coverage can be denied for a particular repair if damage was caused by improper maintenance, incorrect parts or fluids, or faulty workmanship. Keep invoices and maintenance records wherever you have the vehicle serviced.

For 2026 Honda vehicles, Honda's warranty booklet lists a New Vehicle Limited Warranty of 3 years or 36,000 miles and a Powertrain Limited Warranty of 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. Coverage, exclusions and eligibility depend on the applicable warranty terms and the specific repair.
